Arizona State Civilian Shooting Team
1920's
Arizona 1920's
The shooters would travel on mainly dirt roads from all of the states to Camp Perry in vehicles that had problems going across the street, let alone all the way back east to Camp Perry to compete in the National Matches. This had to be a great adventure. And very dedicated shooters.
Standing Left to Right as remembered: Fred Gallager - Tucson, 20 years of age, who later was prisoner who went through the "Battan Death March". 5th from Left Harry V. Chambers - Tucson, 16 years of age, who later went on to direct the Tucson Light & Power Company. 6th from Left Walter Chambers, No relation to Harry Chambers. No other information. 7th from Left George Parker, 18 years of age, went on to become a U.S. Boarder Patrolman, WWII sniper and an NRA Leader.
Front Row Center Team Advisor: Name Unknown. Seated to the right of the Advisor Mr. Skuelly, Phoenix, the oldest member of the team and well known barrel maker named. To the right of Mr. Skuelly Army Infantry Lt, Name Unknown Right End Herb Chambers Jr., Age 18 and older brother of Harry Chambers.

Interesting note: During WWII, Col. Herb Chambers USAAC, 97th Bomb Group 12th Air Force was introduced to an older Army Capt. who as it turned out was the same Army Lt. Team Advosior from Camp Perry. Small World, in the shooting fraternity. If anyone knows the names of those not mentioned, please feel free to e-mail us and we will include their names.

A bit of Camp Perry History
During the 1920's States certainly sent their best shooters. There were State Teams, not "Senior Teams" And "Junior Teams" just "One Team".

The firearms used at the Nationals were often issued at Camp Perry. Shooters from various states would look through the racks for firearms that they had either used in years past, or for "Star Gauge Barrels", or "Lands" that started on the "Top" of the barrel, or what ever was issued to them at issue time. Shooters used issued equipment only!!
