Text Box: CMP-Savage Junior Smallbore Rifle Purchase Program Expands.  Less than one year ago, the CMP announced a new Junior Smallbore Rifle Purchase Program that made it possible for CMP affiliated organizations with junior marksmanship activity to purchase Savage Mark I-FVT single-shot junior smallbore target rifles for $213.00, including shipping.  That price recently increased to $223.00.  This special purchase program was designed to make it possible for junior clubs, 4-H Shooting Sports clubs and camps to acquire rifles that have proven to be exceptionally suitable for youth marksmanship instruction.  After introducing this purchase program that has been very popular with CMP affiliated organizations, the CMP received a number of requests from gun and 4-H clubs that have juniors shooting Rimfire Sporter or silhouette events where 5-shot repeaters like the Savage Mark II-FVT are required.  In response to these requests, Savage and the CMP have now agreed to add the Savage Mark II-FVT to this purchase program.  The CMP-Savage Junior Smallbore Rifle Purchase Program will now offer the Mk I FVT single shot rifle for $223.00 and the Mk II FVT 5-shot rifle for $229.00.  Both are exceptional prices for a junior target rifle of this type.  CMP-affiliated organizations that wish to purchase either rifle must first apply to the CMP for a certificate of purchase eligibility that confirms they are CMP-affiliated with an active junior program. Information on the CMP Junior Rifle Purchase Program is posted at http://www.odcmp.com/Programs/JrRifles.htm#Smallbore.  From there download the Savage Mk I/II FVT Application Form to complete and send to the CMP.  The CMP will issue a Purchase Eligibility Certificate and Order Form that the purchasing organization can then use to order either rifle from Savage at these special prices.  For additional information, contact Mike Conrad, CMP Program Sales at 419-635-2141 ext 1116 or mconrad@odcmp.com.

Camp Perry Air Gun Range Open For Public Shooting.  Shooters, including aspiring new shooters, who live in the Camp Perry, Ohio area are invited to take advantage of a new opportunity to do practice shooting on Tuesday evenings at the Camp Perry Marksmanship Center air gun range.  The Camp Perry 80-point 10-meter air gun range is fully equipped with electronic targets that accommodate air rifle, air pistol or National Match Air Rifle shooting.   The Ottawa County 4-H Shooting Sports Club uses one-half of the range every Tuesday evening for junior three-position air rifle shooting.  School-age juniors are welcome to join this group.  The range will now open for public air rifle and air pistol shooting by adults starting on Tuesday, 24 February.  The range is open from 5:30 PM until 8:00 PM every Tuesday evening.  All shooters who use the range must complete a CMP Eligibility Affidavit and Liability Waiver (one-time only) and attend a short safety briefing.  Depending upon staff availability, arrangements can be made to provide instruction to new shooters.  The cost for adult shooting at the Marksmanship Center is $5.00 per day.  Shooters may bring their own air rifles or air pistols (must be .177 cal. with muzzle velocities of 600 fps or less).  Sporter class air rifles (Daisy M853) are available as loaners at the range.  Shooters should supply their own pellets or may purchase them at the range.  In order to facilitate range staff planning, anyone who would like to shoot on Tuesday evenings is requested to send an email message to vdonoho@odcmp.com stating when you would like to come to the range.

Ups and Downs for Two NCAA Rifle Programs - The NCAA has gained one new rifle program just as a long established program is potentially shutting down. First, there was great news in December from Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia when the school’s athletic department announced that it would add four new athletic programs for the 2009-2010 school year, one being a Co-Ed Varsity Rifle Team. This was exciting news for both the NCAA and for high school athletes in Georgia, where Rifle is a varsity sport sanctioned by the Georgia High School Association. Before CSU added its new program, North Georgia College and State University and Mercer University were the only NCAA shooting programs in Georgia. NGSU is the only one of those two programs that competes in both air rifle and smallbore; Mercer is exclusively an air rifle program. These limited options have resulted in many of Georgia’s top shooting athletes venturing to other parts of the country to pursue college shooting careers. With the addition of CSU’s program, high school athletes have one more option to entice them to stay closer to home.
