National Matches EntriesEntries for the 2004 Small Arms Firing Schools and National Trophy Match continue to come in at a fast pace.  Some events or relay groups have already filled and entries in those events are now being placed on waitlists.  The new M16 EIC rifle match is full with a waitlist.  Requests for morning relay squadding in the Springfield and John C. Garand Matches have already exceeded range capacity and waitlists are being kept for those entry requests.  Space continues to be available in the afternoon relays for the Springfield and Garand Matches, although it now appears that both matches could reach their range capacity maximums.  Detailed entry status updates are posted on the “Match Information” page in the CMP Competitor Tracker listing for each National Matches event.  Space continues to be available in the two Small Arms Firing Schools as well as the Pistol and Rifle Presidents and NTI (EIC) Matches, but shooters who plan to attend any phase of the 2004 National Matches are encouraged to get their entries in as soon as possible.  Entries in any of these events can be made on-line through the CMP web site.  Just click on http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/matchUpcomingSearch.cgi.

Junior Rifle Camp OpeningsA few spaces remain available for junior shooters who still would like to attend a CMP Junior Three-Position Air Rifle Camp.  The openings are available for the 4-H Shooting Sports Camp that the CMP is conducting at Camp Perry on 19-24 July.  The camp was originally designated as a 4-H only camp, but since 4-H club members have not filled the camp, it has now been opened to other juniors.  In addition to participating in a full five-day three-position air rifle camp, campers will have opportunities to participate in the Scholastic Rifle and CMP Rimfire Sporter competitions that will take place on 23-24 July.  Check out the camp program at http://www.odcmp.com/Programs/4hcamp.htm or call Kathy Williams at 419-635-2141, ext 1109 for more information.  There are also openings for the Junior Camp that will take place in Grand Rapids, MN on 27-31 July.  If you are interested in attending this camp, please see the camp program and application form at http://www.odcmp.com/Programs/camp.htm.

Registration Open for National Youth Leadership Conference and Training WeekThe program and registration forms for the National Youth Leadership Conference and Training Week that will take place at Camp Perry on 5-10 October are now posted on the CMP web site at http://www.odcmp.com/Programs/YouthLeadership.htm.  This year’s conference and training courses have been developed to provide a unique combination of opportunities for all junior shooting leaders and coaches to advance their skills and knowledge.  The training courses include both advanced and basic coaching courses in rifle, pistol, shotgun and highpower rifle, as well as a competition officials course to teach match officials how to perform their duties.  The training week culminates with the bi-annual National Youth Shooting Sports Leadership Conference.  This year’s conference will feature two and one-half days of presentations and small group sessions that will examine a variety of key subjects related to how to improve junior shooting programs.  You can register for the conference by opening the CMP Competitor Tracker listing for the conference at http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/matchInfo.cgi?matchID=353.

NRA National Junior Smallbore CampA few openings in the NRA junior camp that will be conducted at Camp Perry on 25-30 July are open.  Interested juniors or their parents should contact Charles Mitchell at cmitchell@nrahq.org as soon as possible.

Massachusetts Teen Sets New Junior Free Pistol National Record.  Early this year, Vlad Babiuk, a fifteen year old shooter from Woburn, Massachusetts set the new national record for the junior free pistol event at the NJOSC Championships.  During those championships Vlad was awarded the gold medal in the free pistol event and the silver in the air pistol event duplicating his earlier performance at the 2004 Massachusetts Junior Olympic Championships.  2004 was only the second time Vlad had attended the OTC event and the first time he was able to compete in both the air pistol and free pistol events.  Vlad is gearing up for competition in the 2004 USA Shooting National Championship this month at Ft. Benning, Georgia where he plans to try out for the National Development Team  (National Junior Team).  Thanks to The Outdoor Message, the official publication of the Gun Owner’s Action League of Massachusetts for the information regarding this outstanding young shooter!  Congratulations Vlad, we look for even higher achievements in the future!

The Palmyra (PA) Sportsmen’s Club Junior Air Rifle Team won the precision team title in the National Guard Bureau Junior Air Rifle National Championship.

Pennsylvania and Nebraska Teams Win National Guard Junior Championship Titles

It may not have equaled the drama of the 2003 National Guard Bureau Junior Air Rifle Tournament when the Palmyra Junior Rifle Team from Pennsylvania was one of three teams that were tied with 1524 scores and a trip to Bisley, England on the line, but the 2004 NGB championship was certainly more rewarding to the Pennsylvania team.  The Palmyra juniors lost the 2003 tie-breaker.  This year, with another trip to Bisley on the line, they dominated team competition to easily win the precision standing position team title and the trip to England.  See the full report on the 2004 National Guard Bureau Junior Championship in the CMP’s First Shot On-Line.
