CMP Trains Navy JROTC Cadets.  Air rifle marksmanship was a major part of the training program for 115 Navy JROTC cadets who participated in the first NJROTC Region 3 Basic Leadership Training Camp held at Camp Perry, Ohio on 13-16 June.  Participating cadets came from high schools in West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana and Michigan.  Daily training activities included air rifle marksmanship, orienteering and a boat safety course.  Most of the 115 participating cadets had no previous marksmanship instruction.  CMP Director Gary Anderson was the chief instructor.  Several members of the CMP Military Rifle Instructor class that also was at Camp Perry for training that week assisted him.  The four days of instruction culminated with a 20-shot competition.  New shooters fired from a supported position while shooters with previous training fired from the standing position.  You can view photos of the NJROTC marksmanship activity at http://www.odcmp.com/Photos/05/NJROTC_Camp/index.htm.

Updated Junior EIC Points Lists.  The list of school-age juniors who have earned EIC credit points that count towards the Junior Distinguished Badge was recently updated.  The new list is on the CMP web site at http://www.odcmp.com/3P/EIC.pdf.  The updated list includes EIC points earned by juniors in all 2005 matches that were reported to CMP.  Address questions or corrections to Dana Bacak at dbacak@odcmp.com, 419-635-2141, ext. 1123.  The CMP also would like to remove from this list any juniors who graduated from high school without earning 30 points.  Their names will be placed on a new archive list.  Coaches or juniors should report names of graduated shooters to Dana Bacak.  Do not report 2005 graduates since they remain eligible to earn points through August of this year.

CMP Military Rifle Instructors Trained.  U. S. Army Service Rifle Team instructors trained 52 experienced civilian highpower service rifle shooters and coaches to prepare them to serve as Military Rifle Instructors.  The training course took place at Camp Perry, Ohio during the week of 13-17 June.  The new CMP-USAMU Military Rifle Instructor Program was developed to provide a cadre of marksmanship experts who could augment USAMU instructors when assigned to train Army NCOs in how to implement the Army’s new Squad Designated Marksman program.  If you are interested in applying to become a Military Rifle Instructor, please download the application form at http://www.odcmp.com/Programs/MRIApp.pdf.

Ryan Tanoue Wins World Cup Gold Medal.  University of Nevada–Reno senior Ryan Tanoue won a gold medal in the Munich World Cup on June 12, and brought home a 2008 Olympic Games quota place for the USA Shooting Team in men’s air rifle.  Tanoue, originally from Honolulu, Hawaii, fired a 597 in the qualification round and a 102.5 final to finish just a tenth of a point ahead of the next competitor.  Alin George Moldoveanu, of Romania, finished in second with a 699.4, while Young Sueb Lim, of Korea, took third with a 698.5.

For more information, check the USA Shooting press release at http://www.usashooting.com/news/NewsView.cfm?id=249 or the ISSF web site http://www.issf-shooting.org/update/calendar.asp?mode=results.  Tanoue’s first competition successes were in three-position air rifle sporter class matches.  He finished second in the first National Junior Olympic Three-Position Air Rifle Sporter Class Championship in 2000.  He went on to win the National JO Precision Class Championship in 2001 and the 2002 NCAA Individual Air Rifle Championship.  Tanoue’s victory in Munich also gave him enough international championship points to earn the coveted U. CMP Air Rifle Equipment Changes.  Daisy Manufacturing recently announced that they would no longer import or sell the Avanti Valiant XS-40 air rifle.  The CMP shooting equipment sales program previously offered the XS-40 sporter class air rifle, but the CMP supply of these rifles also is exhausted.  Consequently, no more Valiant XS-40 air rifles are available from either Daisy or the CMP.  Valiant XS-40 air rifles imported by Daisy and bearing Daisy or Valiant markings are approved sporter class air rifles, but any other rifles of this type would have to be approved by the National Three-Position Air Rifle Council before they can be used in sporter class competition.  The CMP also has temporarily discontinued selling Daisy training-grade pellets (NLU 412) until it can resolve quality-control issues concerning pellets of this type.

Air Rifle Targets Available from CMP.  Coaches and instructors who are looking for either 10-bull competition air rifle or BMC (Basic Marksmanship Course) targets can order them through the CMP E-Store at http://estore.odcmp.com/Store/catalog/catalog.aspx.  The 10-bull competition target (NC-AR10, Item #050) is printed by American Target Company and sells for $12.50/250 targets.  All scoring rings on this conform to ISSF standards.  The BMC target has larger scoring rings that are a must for instructing new shooters.  BMC targets cost $7.50/250 targets.

U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit won Bronze Medal at ISSF World Cup.  Sgt. 1st Class Thomas A. Tamas of the Army Marksmanship Unit clinched the Bronze Medal in Men’s 50-Meter Free Rifle Prone competition in the Munich World Cup with a score of 698.9 out of a possible 709 points.  Tamas went into the final round in eighth place and hit a 104.9 out of a possible 109 in the final 10 shots to make a huge come-from-behind rally and secure a place on the medal stand for the United States.
