CMP Board Honors Retiring Inspector General - Colorado Springs, CO. The CMP Board of Directors honored its retiring Inspector General, Brigadier General Richard Capps (ARNG, Ret.), when it met at Colorado Springs on 27 February. General Capps began serving as one of the CMP Board’s two Inspectors General in 1998, shortly after Congress privatized the Civilian Marksmanship Program. After serving in this position for seven years, General Capps submitted his resignation effective the end of December.

California Gun Club Enjoys Good Weather and Day of Shooting - On February 12th of this year the Winchester Canyon Gun Club, Santa Barbara, California, hosted it's 2nd CMP Meet since re-affiliating with the Civilian Marksmanship Program. Attending this meet were 13 youth and 6 adults. A spirit of friendship prevailed as members shook hands and exchanged greetings. Members were happy to see each other after the January '05 meet was postponed due to road closures and severe winter weather.

NCAA Rifle Championship at Colorado Springs - Rifle is a NCAA varsity sport with its own prestigious championship.  The 2005 National Collegiate Men’s and Women’s Rifle Championships will take place at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs this coming week on 11-12 March.  Teams and Individuals representing Alaska-Fairbanks (defending champion), Army, Jacksonville State, Kentucky, Navy, Nebraska, Texas-El Paso, Xavier, Memphis, Nevada-Reno, UTEP and Tennessee Tech will compete for coveted NCAA championship awards.

2005 CMP Junior Air Rifle Camp Enrollment Opens.  Each summer the Civilian Marksmanship Program sponsors a popular series of Three-Position Air Rifle Camps to teach intermediate and advanced rifle marksmanship skills to junior shooters and their adult leaders.  This is a great opportunity to receive quality instruction from CMP Staff, US Olympians and Coaches, and college rifle team competitors.  Enrollment is now open for the 2005 summer junior camps; team and club coaches and interested parents are encouraged to act as soon as possible to select the camp of your choice and submit applications since these camps normally fill quickly.  Detailed information about the camps and how to apply to attend them is posted on our web site at http://www.odcmp.com/Programs/camp.htm.

Summer Junior Rifle Camp Counselor Jobs Available.  The Civilian Marksmanship Program will hire nine qualified college rifle team members to work as junior rifle camp counselors during the summer of 2005.  Counselors will check in at Camp Perry, Ohio, on May 31st and receive three days of training on June 1-3.  Camps are planned in New Mexico, Nebraska, Camp Perry and Fort Benning.   If counselors wish, they may compete in the USA Shooting Championships during the middle of June.  Counselors will be finished with their duties and released on August 7th.  The last week of work will include duties at Camp Perry, assisting with the National Matches.  Applicants must be current members of collegiate rifle teams or clubs with an advanced knowledge of competitive rifle shooting and a desire to work with high school age youth in a summer sports camp environment.  For more information and applications, please see the CMP web site at  http://www.odcmp.com/Programs/SummerCampCounselor.htm or contact Kathy Williams at kwilliams@odcmp.com.

2005 Small Arms Firing Schools Registration Opens.  The official program and on-line entry forms for the 2005 Pistol or Rifle Small Arms Firing Schools at Camp Perry are now posted on the CMP web site.  The Pistol SAFS will take place on 11-12 July, while the Rifle SAFS will take place on 31 July – 1 August.  The schools are taught by the Army Marksmanship Unit, with on-line coaching provided by military National Matches competitors.  The pistol school offers safety and basic marksmanship training with M9 service pistols; the rifle schools offers training with M16 service rifles.  Entry in each school costs just $30 and students receive schools texts, a SAFS T-shirt and ammunition for the school.  Pistols and rifles are issued for use by students.  To read or download the official program, click http://www.odcmp.com/NM/SAFS.htm.  To register on-line for either Small Arms Firing School, click http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/matchInfo.cgi?matchID=696.

American Wilderness Leadership School Scholarships Available for 4-H Members.  The Safari Club International has offered an opportunity for 4-H club members.  Eight scholarships are available for their American Wilderness Leadership School the week of June 26- July 2 in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The scholarships cover the cost of the one week school in Jackson Hole.  It is the responsibility of the participant to get there and back.  Participants should be 16 - 19 years old.  Two 4-H club members per Extension Region are to be selected to fill the eight scholarships. Special Opportunity for Experienced Coaches and Instructors - If you are an experienced shooting coach or instructor with the time and desire to do something to help young people learn how to shoot, the Civilian Marksmanship Program needs your help.  For the last 5 years, the CMP has worked with summer camps that offer riflery as a camp activity. In working with these camps, the CMP seeks to provide quality training and curriculum, sound advice and, most importantly, the very best instructor training.

Riflery is one of the most popular activities offered at many summer youth camps.  The CMP actively supports Camp Riflery by training camp instructors and counselors how to teach gun safety and marksmanship.
