JROTC Postal Dates ExtendedFiring deadline dates for both the Army JROTC and Navy JROTC postals have been extended three weeks from today, February 25th, to Friday, March 18th.  This change was made because so many Navy and Army JROTC units are just now getting their marksmanship programs reestablished after the JROTC marksmanship stand-downs last fall.  Army and Navy JROTC units now have until March 17 to request targets from CMP (contact dbacak@odcmp.com) and complete firing.  Fired targets must be postmarked by March 18 and reach CMP Headquarters not later than March 25, when results will be final.  The Marine Corps JROTC first and second phase postal competitions ended last week and results are now posted at http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/report_matchResult.cgi?matchID=664.

National JROTC Championship Dates ChangedThe decision to extend the firing deadline for the 2005 JROTC Postals also involved a change in dates for the 2005 National JROTC Championship.  The culminating event for the JROTC marksmanship year will now take place at Fort Benning, Georgia on April 21-23.  The 3rd Navy JROTC Air Rifle Championship will take place at Fort Benning’s Army Marksmanship Unit ranges earlier that week on April 18-19.  All qualifying teams and individual cadets will be announced at the end of March after JROTC postal targets are scored.

Western CMP Games Garand/Springfield Matches Coming to CaliforniaThe CMP has just announced that the John C. Garand, Springfield and Vintage Military Rifle Matches that became the most popular events in the National Matches at Camp Perry will be offered this year to shooters in the western part of the USA through a unique new competition.  The 2005 Western CMP Games will take place at Camp Pendleton, California on May 13-15.  CMP staff from Camp Perry and Anniston will stage this event on the USMC Wilcox Range at Camp Pendleton in cooperation with the Santa Margarita Gun Club of Oceanside, California.  Up to 100 firing points are available for two days of firing.  Events start with a clinic on Friday afternoon.  CMP staff from Alabama will have a shipment of M1 Garands and other rifles available for inspection and tagging for purchase.  Shooters will have the option of shooting one, two or all three events, a Garand Match, Springfield Match and Vintage Military Rifle Match.

If you live in the Western USA and are interested in being part of the Garand Match experience, mark the dates, May 13-15 on your calendar.  The match program will be released via the CMP Shooters News in the next ten days; you will be able to enter on-line through the CMP web site just as soon as the program is released.

JROTC Marksmanship Instructor CourseA major CMP priority during the first weeks of 2005 has been the development and implementation of a new one-day JROTC Marksmanship Instructor Course requested by the Army and Navy JROTC commands.

The DCM and CMP staff developed the course, and has just completed training a group of 101 JROTC instructors and junior leaders who are marksmanship experts as Master Instructors for the course.  Master Instructor Training Workshops were held at Camp Perry, Ohio on February 4-5, at Reno, Nevada on February 14-15 and at Fort Benning, Georgia on February 18-19.  The course introduces JROTC instructors to the JROTC air rifle marksmanship program, and trains them to teach safety and basic marksmanship skills as well as how to establish and operate safe air rifle ranges.  New Master Instructors are already very active in teaching the eight-hour course to JROTC instructors in their areas.  CMP staff has already shipped over 800 instructor notebooks and CDs to support the first courses.

Small Arms Firing School and National Matches Entries to Open SoonPrograms for the 2005 Small Arms Firing Schools and National Trophy Pistol and Rifle Matches that will take place this summer at Camp Perry are now being developed and will be available through the CMP web site as well as in printed versions in March.  2005 SAFS and National Matches dates are already fixed and posted at http://www.odcmp.com/NationalMatches.htm.  Be sure to put the dates for 2005 National Matches events of interest to you on your calendar now.  As soon as these programs are released in March, you will be able to enter on-line through the CMP web site.
