Guide to Compressed Air Usage.  With so many shooting programs now using rifles and pistols powered by compressed air, it is important for coaches and instructors to know how to safely use the air cylinders and scuba tanks that are required for these air guns.  This is an excellent, well-illustrated article, written by master target gunsmith Scott Pilkington, that gives detailed information about compressed air equipment.  The article is posted on the Pilkington Competitions Equipment web site at http://www.pilkguns.com/scuba.htm.

Two new articles are posted on The First Shot On-Line, the CMP’s electronic newsletter.  Check The First Shot front page at http://www.odcmp.org/0105/default.asp to see summaries of all recent articles with links to the full articles.  The First Shot On-Line front page also displays readers’ comments and a link to the popular CMP Forum.  The latest articles posted are described below.

Former Junior Highpower Shooter Enroute to Iraq.  New York State Rifle and Pistol Association Highpower Director Ira Ruderman reports that Nick Patch, who was a firing member of the NYSRPA junior team that won the prestigious Minuteman Junior Team Trophy at the Camp Perry National Matches is on his way to Iraq as a member of a USMC Reserve unit.  Patch honed his skills while participating in the NYSRPA junior highpower program which made it possible for him to attend the CMP-USMC Junior Highpower Clinic and National Trophy Rifle Matches.  We wish him and his fellow Marines all the best for a safe return.

Articles WantedHas your shooting club or organization recently completed a successful event or competition?  Have members of your organizations enjoyed a special success that others would be interested in knowing about?  The First Shot On-Line is looking for articles about interesting shooting sports events and accomplishments that we can share with our readers.  Send us your reports, preferably with two or three photos and we’ll be glad to consider them for posting on The First Shot On-Line.  They don’t have to be polished articles.  Just send us the information and we can get it in shape for posting.  Send your event reports and digital photo files to Dale Miles at dmiles@odcmp.com.

Coach Training CoursesJROTC instructors who are looking for a coach training course to attend in the next few weeks as they work to get their unit marksmanship programs back in operation should consider the following NRA/USA Shooting/CMP Coach Training Courses:

New Deadlines for National Guard Bureau Junior Air Rifle Tournament The deadlines for firing and sending in targets for the National Guard Bureau Junior Air Rifle Tournament Postal Phase has just been extended until 28 March.  Junior clubs and teams can continue to order targets until 11 March and fired targets must be postmarked and on their way to the CMP by the 28th of March.  Scores will be posted by 7 April and the challenge period will end on 15 April, when the qualifiers for the NGB National Championship will be announced.  As many of you may be aware, the National Guard Junior Air Rifle Championship is a competition that offers truly outstanding opportunities for our young male and female shooters.  We have continued to be successful in promoting junior shooting across the nation by encouraging excellence among our young competitors, and we are proud to reward them for their dedication and tenacity.  I challenge each organization to enter the postal phase.  Team scores must be received by the end of February, for your teens to have a chance to shoot at the National Guard Junior Air Rifle Championship, which will be held in June at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY.  The complete National Guard Junior Air Rifle Championship Program and Target Order Forms can be downloaded at http://www.odcmp.com/3P/NGB.htm.
