To:  2004 National Matches Competitors:

On behalf of the Civilian Marksmanship Program, I want to thank you for your participation in the 2004 National Trophy Matches.  Now that a new year has begun, it is time to plan for the 2005 National Matches.  We are sending this email message both to wrap-up the 2004 matches and to help you and CMP plan for the 2005 matches:

  1. NATIONAL TROPHY MATCHES BULLETIN.  The printed, “souvenir edition” of the National Trophy Rifle and Pistol Matches Results Bulletin has been printed and will be mailed to 2004 National Trophy Matches competitors during the third week of January.  Now, official results are posted on the CMP web site during the matches, but we still publish a printed bulletin with feature articles about the matches and photos of the winners and trophy presentations.  If you do not receive your copy of the printed National Trophy Bulletin within the next few weeks, please contact the CMP Competitions Department at 419-635-2141, ext 1132 or competitions@odcmp.com.
  1. NATIONAL MATCHES BULLETIN COVER.  The cover for the 2004 National Matches Bulletin was taken from another original painting that the 2003 National Matches Centennial artist Jerry Antolik of Wyoming made for the CMP in 2004.  Posters of that painting can be purchased from the CMP for $12.95 each plus shipping.  Go to the CMP E-Store web site at http://estore.odcmp.com/Store/catalog/catalog.aspx  and order item #706AIM.
  1. 2005 NATIONAL MATCHES SCHEDULE.  The 2005 National Matches schedule was finalized during our Fall National Matches Planning Conference in November.  The 2005 schedule is very similar to the 2004 schedule except that the NRA smallbore matches have one extra day in 2005 for the Pershing Trophy Match.  The addition of this extra day in 2005 only means that the 2005 National Rimfire Sporter Match will be held on Sunday, 24 July, instead of on its usual Saturday date.  The 2005 schedule is posted on the CMP web site at http://www.odcmp.com/NationalMatches.htm.  Information on the NRA championships is posted at http://www.nrahq.org/compete/nm_campperry.asp.
  1. ENTRIES IN NATIONAL TROPHY MATCHES.  The on-line entry system used by the CMP to take entries for the 2004 National Trophy Matches and Small Arms Firing Schools worked very well and will again be utilized in 2005.  Entry forms will be posted on the CMP Competition Tracker web page starting in March.  On-line entries greatly facilitate entry processing and communications with competitors; you are encouraged to make your entries in the 2005 CMP matches on-line if at all possible.
  1. 2005 CMP COMPETITION RULES.  Final decisions on CMP rule changes for the 2005 rulebook will be made in the next few weeks with a projected rulebook printing in late February or early March.  The 2004 edition of CMP Competition Rules remains valid until then.  If you have any recommendations or requests for rule changes that have not already been submitted to the CMP, please send them, in writing, to CMP Competitions via email at competitions@odcmp.com or via fax to 419-635-2565.
  1. 2006 NATIONAL MATCHES SCHEDULE CHANGE PROPOSALS.  The NRA and CMP are reviewing the entire National Matches schedule to determine whether improvements are possible.  One proposal (it is still just a proposal) would switch the NRA and CMP highpower matches so that the NRA highpower matches follow the NRA smallbore matches and the CMP National Trophy Rifle Matches would come at the end of the National Matches.  This might make it possible to add one or two days of competition so that popular events like the Garand and Springfield Matches could have full days on both ranges.  A major concern with this proposed change, however, is its impact on juniors.  Over 300 juniors fire in the National Trophy Rifle Matches and many of them must return home in time to start school in August, some very early in August.  The CMP needs your input on this.  If the CMP National Trophy Matches did not end until the second weekend in August, would this be too late for many juniors to participate?  What is the latest date that the National Trophy Rifle Matches can end and still allow juniors to compete?  In order to end the matches by the first weekend in August (to allow more juniors to compete in highpower), another schedule proposal would have the CMP and NRA pistol matches start over the fourth of July weekend.  How would this affect participation in the pistol matches?  Please send your inputs on these schedule change proposals to CMP Competitions at competitions@odcmp.com.
  1. EIC MATCH RESULTS AND DISTINGUISHED LISTS POSTED ON WEB.  The CMP now posts all pistol and rifle EIC match results on its Competition Tracker web site.  Go to http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi and click on “Competition Results” to see them.  Results for all 2004 EIC matches that were reported to the CMP are posted so you can now see how shooters all over the country did in these matches.  The CMP’s complete list of Distinguished Shooters is also posted.  If there are EIC scores that were fired, but not posted or Distinguished records that are wrong, please contact CMP Competitions.
  1. SHOOTER INPUT NEEDED.  In order to make the 2005 and future National Trophy Matches better, we need your recommendations.  If there are things you would like to see done better or differently, please tells us about them.  Again, please send your comments on the National Matches to competitions@odcmp.com.  The CMP is committed to making the National Matches better and your ideas are vital in helping us do that, especially as we begin our preparations for the 2005 National Matches.

We hope you already have the 2005 National Matches on your calendar.  All of us at the CMP certainly look forward to welcoming you back to the 2005 National Matches.  Happy New Year and good luck in your shooting this year!

Gary Anderson, DCM
