Gary Anderson Invitational History:
This major junior competition began in 1996 as the Atlanta 500 Air Rifle
Championship. From 1997 through 2000, it was known as the Wolf Creek
600. In 2001, the match location changed from the Wolf Creek Olympic
Complex near Atlanta to the Army Marksmanship Unit ranges at Fort
Benning. That year the Wolf Creek Young Shooters Association renamed
the match the Gary Anderson Invitational. Starting this year, 2009, the
CMP is taking over the sponsorship of the Gary Anderson Invitational and
will conduct it at its new Anniston Marksmanship Center in Anniston,
Alabama. The center has 80 firing points, all equipped with electronic
targets. The Civilian Marksmanship Program is sponsoring this
three-position air rifle invitational as an open sanctioned competition
to permit participation by high school teams as well as by club teams.
INVITATION
Dear Shooting Team
Coach:
You and your shooters are cordially
invited to participate in the 2009 Gary Anderson Invitational.
The Gary Anderson Invitational is one of the major junior
shooting championships in the country. The invitational offers
three-position air rifle competition for middle and high school
individuals and teams. Teams may choose to fire in one of five relays
on Friday evening, all day Saturday or on Sunday morning on 4-6
December. The Gary Anderson Invitational is an outstanding
competition opportunity for every school or club shooting team, whether
they are contenders for championship honors or want to participate in a
major competition to see how their shooters compare with other junior
shooters from all over the United States. The 2009 program includes
precision and sporter class divisions. Both divisions will have awards
for competitors who fire the top individual and team scores. There will
also be special awards for the best new shooters and junior varsity
teams. The winning precision and sporter teams will receive trophy
plaques and have their team information engraved on the Gary Anderson
Invitational Trophy. This rotating trophy will be on display at the
event and housed on permanent display at CMP Headquarters. The top
three sporter and precision teams will also receive cash awards of $500,
$300 and $200 respectively.
Medals will be awarded to the top 25 open and top 15 new shooters in
both the sporter and precision classes. Every shooter and team,
regardless of the type of equipment they use or their level of
experience, will have an opportunity to compete for awards in a truly
high quality competition on one of the finest air gun shooting
facilities in the world. This Excellence-in-Competition championship is
one that every team should attend—we sincerely hope you and your team
will join us in Anniston in December for a great competition.
Yours for good shooting,
James Hall

Shooting on the electronic target systems is
truly a special experience. Electronic targets instantly display the
exact result of every shot. Shooters will not need spotting scopes.
Electronic scoreboards make shooting in Anniston a great spectator
event. Parents and friends who want to see your team compete are
welcome. The targets on the Anniston range can be changed from the
prone to standing and kneeling heights—there is no shooting on tables at
the Anniston range. Since the targets are electronic, no competitors
need to bring spotting scopes, but they will need to bring shooting
mats. No shooting mats are available at the Anniston range. Range
staff will brief all competitors before every relay to explain the
target system and range operation. The range will be available for open
training during the day on Friday, 4 December, for teams that wish to
arrive early. The training fee is $5.00 per competitor; contact the
Match Director to make arrangements (256-835-8455, ext. 1145;

Three-Position Air Rifle Tournament
This tournament has four competition events:
Individual Sporter, Individual Precision, Team Sporter and Team
Precision. All competitors will fire a three-position 3X20 course of
fire and a 10-shot final that will be fired at the end of each relay.
For individual rankings, the 10-shot final round scores will be added
to the 60-shot scores of the competitors who had the top eight sporter
and precision class 60-shot totals. The 3X20 qualification total will
rank all remaining shooters. See Rule 10.1.5. Everyone who competes in
the Gary Anderson Invitational will have the experience of shooting in a
final. The individual 3X20 scores fired by the four members each team
will be used to determine team winners. Final round scores are not used
for team totals.
Rules and Sanctioning
The competition will be governed by the
7th Edition 2008-2010
National Standard Three-Position Air Rifle Rules.
Copies of the rules may be downloaded from the CMP website at

The match is sanctioned by the National Three-Position Air Rifle Council
as a CMP Cup Match so that scores may be recognized as National Records
and competitors can earn EIC credit points that count towards earning
the Junior Distinguished Badge.

area of the competition center, but are not within walking distance. No
